About Windows 7

Windows 7 is Microsoft's operating system for personal computers, released to the public in October 2009; this page covers the Professional and Ultimate editions. It is a paid product, and before you look for a Windows 7 download you should know that Microsoft ended support on January 14, 2020: no more security updates, and the official recommendation is to move to Windows 11.

Overview

Windows 7 was built on Windows Vista and arrived as its successor. It kept the familiar Start menu and desktop, ran well on the hardware of its time and became the system many offices used for years. The last major update, Service Pack 1 with build 6.1.7601, came out about a year and a half after launch. It came in versions for IA-32 and x86-64 processors and in many interface languages. Today Windows 7 matters mostly for old programs and machines that cannot run anything newer, such as a PC controlling lab or industrial equipment. For everyday use, browsing, banking and email, a current and supported system is the safer choice, and Microsoft's own support page for Windows 7 now points visitors to Windows 11.

What Microsoft recommends now

Microsoft's Windows 7 system requirements page recommends a new PC with Windows 11, noting that today's computers are faster, more powerful and more secure. Windows 10 support also ended on October 14, 2025. Current official Windows downloads are on Microsoft's software download page.

If you must run Windows 7

  • Use a legitimate licence and original installation media.
  • Keep the machine offline or on an isolated network if it only runs one old program.
  • Consider running Windows 7 inside a virtual machine on a modern computer.
  • Back up the system image so you can restore it quickly.

Moving from Windows 7

If you are still using a Windows 7 computer, plan the move before something breaks. Copy documents, photos and browser bookmarks to an external drive, and write down the programs you rely on together with their licence keys. Check whether each program has a version for a current system; many do, and those that do not can often be replaced by a free alternative. A newer computer with a supported system will then receive security updates, and your files will be ready to copy across.

Security risks

Windows 7 images offered on file-sharing and download sites are often modified, pre-activated or bundled with malware, and there is no way to verify what was changed. An old system connected to the internet is also an easy target for attacks aimed at unpatched software. If you need Windows for daily work, install a supported version instead.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: familiar, lightweight interface.
  • Pro: runs older software and hardware.
  • Con: Microsoft recommends moving on.
  • Con: modern programs increasingly do not support it.
  • Con: unofficial copies are risky.

Alternatives

Our listings include Windows 10 and Windows 11 from Microsoft, and Kali Linux for security testing rather than everyday desktop use.
